Koffee with Karina and YouTuber Amber Scholl: How to Stand-Out on YouTube!

Amber Scholl is a crafty and fashionable YouTuber. She teaches her viewers how to look amazing and luxurious on a budget! The YouTube world is amazed with Amber because she was able to reach more than 500,000 subscribers in a short period of time. Her bubbly personality shines through in every single video, and trust me, she is going to become your online BFF.

I know you majored in communications (GIRL, me too!) and I would love to know if your experience doing broadcast journalism helped you when creating a YouTube channel?
Yes and no. The practice in front of the camera was good and learning the basics of what makes a good "news package" helped (i.e intros and outros, b-roll etc. haha) People often comment my videos seem like a really weird newscast, and I think that's why! But, a lot of what I learned in school is the exact opposite of what I do on YouTube. In school, I learned: don't smile, don't show your personality, keep to the facts only and dress conservatively. Not quite my style, so it's funny that everything I used to get marked down for in class is what made me popular online!

I love the fact that your Instagram and your YouTube layouts match! SOO CUTE, it's so you! Was this something that you planned?
Not at all actually! I always have been obsessed with making my Instagram look pretty (as an artsy person, I can't help it). And I literally use all my Instagram pics for thumbnails, so it happens to work out that my Instagram feed matches my YouTube feed, a happy coincidence!

I absolutely adore the uniqueness of your videos! It seems as if you take inspiration from your personal life and what your audience wants to see! How do you come up with your video ideas?
Almost every single one of my videos comes from the same thought: "Damn it! I want that but it's too expensive." So, I figured out a way to make it for cheap! And often times, it ends up looking better than whatever it was I wanted in the first place because I can put my own personal twist on it. I LOVED Kylie's denim jacket, but to be honest, the one inspired by hers, that I made myself, I like even more! (shh, don't tell her!). The other videos like "how to walk in heels" or "how to take a good selfie" are 100% audience requested. If I get a bunch of requests for the same thing, I know it's a good idea! So, I make it!

Your videos are so unique and you always make DIYs that are trending, but you always put a personal twist to them and I think it makes you stick out so so much (in the best way possible). Do you have any tips on standing out on YouTube?
People always ask what my biggest tip for YouTube is - and I honestly think the answer is to do what you love most, whatever that may be! I had NO IDEA anyone would want to watch me glue sparkles onto my shoes, but lo and behold, apparently there is a big market for that! Whatever it is you are most passionate about, make videos about that because your passion will shine through. And a catchy title and thumbnail don't hurt either!

I was just watching your video on walking with heels (LOVED IT) and I am so curious - for videos like these where you have different shots, do you plan them out before or do you just film as you go?
I never plan my videos in advance, which is why they are kind of a mess most of the time, haha. I just start filming and see what's going to happen. It's fun to switch up the layout because it makes editing a little more fun! Like the heels video, I knew I wanted it to be kind of like a class, so when I found my old glasses, cleaning out my room, I thought it would be really funny to act like a teacher in an educational video and film it like that! Plus, the sun was setting, I had to film it all in literally one hour, so everything ended up being forced to be a one-take wonder. The rush kind of made every shot into a joke, and it worked out really well actually! (and Harry got to make a debut, so it was a win-win lol)

Amber's Vlogging Favorites: iMovie, my canon g7x and photoshop to stretch my Instagram pics into thumbnail size!
Emily Cordon Lip Pots: I've had it for a day and used like the entire thing Iol.
Essie "eternal optimist": I just found a new nail polish color! Which sounds boring af but I always wear the same nude so this is a big deal to find another one i like more lol. It's like a beautiful rosy-pink color.
